5 Tips for Healthy Eating When You Work from Home
When your office and home are essentially one entity, and the kitchen is within arm’s reach, it can feel like an uphill battle when it comes to making smart eating choices. Luckily, there are several ways to eat healthy when you work from home.
With an endless food supply in such close proximity, you may find yourself frequenting the kitchen in times of stress, boredom, indecisiveness, or most commonly, work procrastination mode. This is a tremendous deterrent if you’re trying to improve your diet.

Clean out Your Fridge
Now is a better time than ever to tackle that fridge cleaning project you’ve had your eye on for months. You won’t consume those high-calorie, high-fat, high-sugar foods if they’re not in your fridge! It’s as simple as that. Instead, opt to fill your fridge with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and other healthy snacks.
Avoid the Kitchen Area
Plan out your day according to the foods and beverages you need and try and take as much with you into your home office as you can. Be strategic about avoiding the kitchen as much as possible, which isn’t easy when you work from home. Bring snacks and lunch into your workspace, or set up a coffee pot in your office if that is what’s causing you to re-enter the kitchen multiple times a day.
Develop Healthy Rewards
Establishing healthier addictions and treats for yourself will be much more beneficial in the long run than rewarding yourself with a food item every time you achieve a work-related goal. Substitute that sugar-packed snack for a nice walk around the neighbourhood, fitness or art class in the middle of the day, calling up a friend, or time with your favourite blog. When you work from home, you can be pretty creative with your rewards!
Take Care of Yourself
One of the main causes of overeating is stress. Once you start taking care of yourself, your urge to overeat will decrease. Taking care of yourself at work means working at a reasonable pace, taking frequent mini-breaks and then longer breaks throughout the day, and learning to relax, pause, breathe, and stretch.
Drinking water throughout the workday can help your body feel full, so be sure to get in those 64 ounces per day. Frequently drinking water, or another healthy beverage such as tea gives your mind and body something to do that doesn’t involve consuming unnecessary calories. Not to mention, refilling your beverage is a great excuse to get up and stretch those legs!
